A fireplace and chimney enclosure “tacked” onto the exterior of a structure generally needs to be insulated to prevent cold air from entering the house, but the insulation inside the chase has to be secured so it can’t droop, sag or fall against the fireplace (or chimney). If it does the combustible insulation can heat unevenly and warp.
