Figure. 1. The raised hearth extension is a box that extends into the room about the same level as the bottom of the firebox. In this instance, the rear of the hearth extension – which consisted of combustible material – was in direct contact with the fireplace and a fire started under the extension.


Figure 2. Many fireplace chimneys can’t be straight, so offset sections like this one must align properly with chimney chases to avoid obstructions. Offsets can lead to chimneys being too close to combustibles or improperly supported.
