WebQ/A: What gas water heater tests would you like us to consider?

With the setup for testing a gas water heaterÕs operation under various conditions, we can monitor temperature, oxygen, and carbon monoxide levels in the enclosure.

As reported in Fire Findings, Vol. 10, No. 2, we experimented with controlling air supply to the water heater from unlimited to virtually none. We have other tests to conduct, such as placing clothing, etc. around the bottom of the water heater to see what effect that would have under varying air supply conditions. In other words, in addition to varying the air supply, weÕll test what would happen if we vary the locations air can enter the combustion compartment of the water heater.

What other gas water-heater tests would you like us to consider conducting while we have the test apparatus set up? What are your suggestions for possible failure scenarios or conditions?
